The third oldest drink in history is alcohol. First there was water, then there was juice, then, as that juice fermened there was alcohol. As people started to realized what had happened to their juices they realized that some fermented juices tasted better than others. Noticing that grapes were not nearly as bitter and made for a quite appetizing snack as well as juice, the fertile crescent (now known as the Middle East, Greece, Lebanon and Turkey) started producing the first intentional wines. The industry has changed dramatcally in the thousands of years since, but the core process, the fermentation, has changed little and we still enjoy what the fertile crescent discovered many millenia ago.
